Booth’s Botched Bet

John Wilkes Booth by FIP

After leaving his acting career, John Wilkes Booth attempted to make a fortune in Pennsylvania’s oilfields.

In January 1864, he leased 3.5 acres near Franklin, Pennsylvania, and, along with partners, formed the Dramatic Oil Company. (apparently pun intended)

Although their well, produced about 25 barrels of oil a day, an attempt to boost output by "shooting" the well ruined it.

Booth abandoned the oil venture by July 1864 and later assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in Washington, D.C.
